iPhone production in the Chinese city of Zhengzhou, where the Foxconn plant is located, may fall by 6 million smartphones due to employee protests and the unfavorable situation with COVID-19 in the region, informed Bloomberg citing sources.
A lot will depend on how quickly the Taiwanese company Foxconn Technology Group can get people back on assembly lines after protests against coronavirus restrictions, according to the agency’s interlocutors. If the protests continue in the coming weeks, production could be postponed again.
As noted by the agency, Apple has reduced the total production plan for 3 million devices, from 90 to 87 million smartphones. It is assumed that those 6 million mobile devices that will be underproduced this year will go on sale next year.
On November 2, China introduced strict anti-epidemic measures in the economic zone of Zhengzhou Airport, where Foxconn, the Taiwanese iPhone manufacturer, is located. The Chinese authorities have decided to introduce a lockdown from 2 to 9 November. As a result, residents of the area were forbidden to gather together and leave their homes. Also, daily PCR testing has been deployed on the territory of the zone.
As a result of restrictive measures, the main assembly production of the iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max has moved to work at reduced capacities. Due to covid restrictions, protests broke out at the Foxconn plant, also related to non-payment of wages.
