Russian banks in January-March 2023 repelled 2.7 million attacks by cyber fraudsters and prevented theft of 712 billion rubles, follows from report Bank of Russia. According to the regulator’s estimates, in the first quarter, the attackers managed to carry out 252.1 thousand fraudulent operations, stealing a total of 4.5 billion rubles.
The Central Bank reported that most of the funds, including loans, were stolen using online banking. “We see that the schemes of fraudsters are becoming more and more complex, they are actively using social engineering methods, forcing citizens to voluntarily give their funds, they are using new tricks of deception,” Vadim Uvarov, director of the information security department of the Bank of Russia, quotes the press service as saying.
The press release notes that in the first quarter, the regulator initiated the blocking of 97,000 telephone numbers from which scammers called. According to the Central Bank, the activity of cybercriminals increased by 2.5 times over the reporting period. The Bank of Russia initiated the blocking of 8.3 thousand phishing sites disguised as official websites of financial organizations, the press service reported.
The most common methods of stealing funds from bank cards (carding) are based on psychological methods of persuading, deceiving or intimidating customers. According to the Central Bank, more than 80% of all attacks are related to social engineering.
