Auto sales in the EU grew by 16.9% in three quarters – Kommersant

In the first nine months of this year, 7.94 million cars were sold in the EU, it follows from report European Automotive Manufacturers Association (ACEA). This is 16.9% more than in the same period last year. Nevertheless, the European car market is still far from pre-Covid levels: in 2019, about 10 million cars were sold over three quarters.
In September, 861 thousand cars were sold in the EU, which is 9.2% more than last year. This is the 14th straight month of sales growth.
Cars with gasoline engines continue to lead the market, accounting for 34.1%, which, however, is noticeably lower than last year’s share of 35.3%. In September, 293.9 thousand of these cars were sold in the EU, which is 5.5% more than last year.
The second most popular choice among buyers remains hybrid cars, whose sales increased by 30.5% compared to September 2022, to 235.3 thousand. The share of such cars in total demand is 27.3%.
For the third time this year, electric cars have surpassed diesel cars in popularity among buyers. In September, sales of electric vehicles increased by 14.3% compared to last year, to 127.1 thousand. And their market share reached 14.8%. Sales of diesel cars fell by 12.5%, to 109.7 thousand, and their market share at the end of September was 12.7%.
