Anton Adasinsky shoots The Divine Comedy thanks to Sokurov

Director, actor, choreographer, musician, creator of the avant-garde theater DEREVO, performer of the role of Mephistopheles in Sokurov’s “Faust” Anton Adasinsky is filming a fairy tale-parable for children and adults “A ticket to the Divine Comedy”. Dante Alighieri’s poem is intertwined with reality, and the film’s slogan sounds impressive: “Children will not take everyone into the future.”
Anton worked for Slava Polunin in The Actors, participated in Sergei Kuryokhin’s Pop Mechanics, and appeared on the stage of the Mariinsky Theater as Drosselmeyer in the ballet The Nutcracker directed by Mikhail Shemyakin. His theater DEREVO was something unrealistically beautiful in the 90s. Now Anton is making films.
According to the plot, the minute hand quarreled with the hour hand, a giant hole was formed. Boy David must save the world clock. For this, he will go on a journey, end up in the village of the Lazy and the village of Obzhor. His path is full of trials. He will meet human vices, clock hands and notes that will help him achieve his goal.
The film is about how we change from year to year, and our jokes, sarcasm, habits affect something in the Mountain World, the Kingdom of Heaven. Anton is sure that the small world and the big one are closely connected. In his film, two clowns in the arena jokingly break time. It stops. This episode will be filmed on the island of Olkhon in Lake Baikal, where Anton will go to teach. There was left from the guest performers a picturesque big top with holes with the inscription “Golden Horde”. I had to see him last summer. This is something infernal. Not a soul around. Only the fabric is rinsed in the wind. Along with the clock, such concepts as “hurry up”, “stick to the schedule”, “do everything in order” disappear. “Something slowed down, and the world returned to the feeling of evening, sunset, dawn, harvest, autumn … People began to live as before,” says Anton Adasinsky.
The main character, the boy David, is played by the director’s son, David Adasinsky. He thinks the clock needs to be fixed. He will go all over the world, find a hole, collect broken arrows, meet another boy, whose role is played by the second son of the director, Artur Adasinsky. This hero was a small hand in a broken watch. The boys will have a dialogue: “Do I need to repair the clock? Can we live like this?” “People are used to everything by the clock.” “And you don’t decide for people. Think for yourself.”
Anton Adasinsky cites the words of the writer Borges, who said that he did not know anything, since he did not even know the date of his own death. “We don’t know how much we have left. Maybe tomorrow or the day after tomorrow the final will come, – says Anton. – Annushka, vegetable oil … When you think about it, you begin to appreciate seconds. The main goal of the film is to give people back a sense of time. There can be no empty day lived, and even more so life. Remember the phrase of the early deceased writer Nikolai Ostrovsky? He was still a guy, basically. We know his words by heart from school, but it’s not bad to repeat them. He said that life should be lived in such a way that it would not be excruciatingly painful for the aimlessly lived years. We were sick of the book How the Steel Was Tempered, but he’s right.
And the “Ticket to the Divine Comedy” began with “Faust” by Alexander Sokurov.
– Director Alexander Sokurov came to my dressing room and for some reason squatted down, began to look at me from the bottom up, – Anton recalls. – After the performance, I was in makeup. He said: “Anton, make some kind of grimace.” I did. “Come to the screen test tomorrow,” Sokurov said. It so happened that I starred in his “Faust” in the role of Mephistopheles. It was wonderful work. I saw how a big and real movie is being made. Sokurov is a gigantic man, a monster in the good sense of the word. At some point, I realized that we were filming Dante’s Divine Comedy in Faust, fragments of human sins. They didn’t make it into the movie, but it was filmed, and it was filmed cool. At the end of our work, I asked Sokurov why he did not make a heavy Bible for millions of people according to Dante. He replied that he was not ready. We all agreed and every day we went to him and persuaded him to film the Divine Comedy, they said that we were ready to sweep the floor, make sandwiches, just take it. “Faust” was finished, but the mantra that Dante should be filmed remained. I realized that Alexander would not take this job. Something won’t let him. And I decided that I had to do it myself. I received the Nika award for Mephistopheles. And he took it up, despite the fright of his acquaintances, who said that you should not play the devil – you will end badly. And everything ended well for me, because two guys were born, twins Arthur and David. It was an award more abruptly than Nicky. The children grew up, and I think that we need to hurry up, and I began to shoot anything. Suddenly a message came from heaven – to make a musical with a children’s choir. We made it in three months, and a movie was born from it. I realized that it is not worth shaking a finger, being edifying and moralizing. The children helped me a lot.
Having worked with Sokurov, Anton Adasinsky carefully accepts proposals from other directors. According to him, after Mephistopheles, there is no need to play anything anymore. Except Jesus Christ. He liked acting, so he gladly agrees to work in fairy tales, medieval dramas, films about the Vikings, where good triumphs over evil. If suddenly there is tension with the director on the set, then Anton simply leaves. He did it twice, because there is only one life and he is not going to endure what does not climb into any gates.
Anton dreamed that his friends and acquaintances, who have some weight in this world, would say to the camera the words from the Divine Comedy: “Love that moves the suns and luminaries.” Then she would reign. Some of those whom he wrote down did not get along with each other, but, having said the phrase to Dante, they may become friends.
