Amazon will launch a separate cloud service for Europe – Kommersant

Today, October 25, Amazon Web Services (AWS), the cloud computing division of Amazon, announced about plans to launch a separate cloud service in the EU. The new Amazon Web Services European Sovereign Cloud will be designed for European government agencies and corporations with high data security requirements. All of its servers will be located in the European Union, and only AWS employees with EU citizenship will support the service. First, the new service will be launched in Germany, and it will be available to customers from different EU countries.

EU authorities are more active in regulating the technology sector than most other countries. Last year, the EU began examining how European government agencies store their data and whether it complies with privacy requirements. EU officials and experts have repeatedly spoken about the need for “digital sovereignty,” although there are no precise definitions of this concept yet. Microsoft and Oracle have previously launched cloud services localized in Europe for local government agencies and other similar clients.
