Illinois District Court decidedthat Amazon Web Services (AWS) must pay Kove $525 million for infringing three of its patents.

Chicago-based Kove sued AWS in 2018, claiming it developed technologies that could store and process large amounts of data long before the advent of cloud computing in its current form. Amazon, the plaintiff argued, took advantage of these technologies in its DynamoDB database management service.

The court ruled that AWS did infringe Kove’s patents on the three technologies at issue, but did so unintentionally.

“We disagree with the court’s decision and intend to appeal,” an Amazon spokesperson said after the ruling. “We thank the jury, who also found that AWS did not intentionally infringe the patents.”

Lead Kove attorney Courtland Reichman called the verdict “a testament to the power of innovation and the importance of protecting start-up companies’ intellectual property rights from tech giants,” reports Reuters.
