“AliExpress Russia” became the only marketplace with a reduced number of sellers

The marketplace “AliExpress Russia” recorded an outflow of sellers, from the beginning of the year to May, their number decreased by 27%. About it informed “Kommersant” with reference to the data of the “Point marketplaces” service.
At the same time, the number of sellers on other sites has grown significantly. In particular, at Sbermegamarket the number of sellers increased by 120%, at Ozon – by 92%, atYandex Market” – by 89%, Wildberries – by 36%. On average, the total number of sellers on marketplaces has grown by 51% since the beginning of 2023.
As Konstantin Kanivets, CEO of the Tochka Marketplaces service, noted, the decrease in sellers on the site is associated with a reduction in investment in the project. According to him, attracting new sellers is a serious cost item. According to Data Insight, last year, sales of Aliexpress Russia decreased by 47%, to 56.2 billion rubles.
Aliexpress Russia is a joint venture between VK, USM International, the Chinese Alibaba Group and the Russian Direct Investment Fund. Now the Alibaba Group’s share in Aliexpress Russia is 47.85%, USM – 24.3%, VK – 15% and RDIF – 12.85%. The marketplace operates separately from the global AliExpress controlled by Alibaba Group.
In the first quarter of 2022, VK wrote off almost 10 billion rubles. due to the depreciation of a stake in Aliexpress Russia amid economic uncertainty that affects the e-commerce market, the holding’s quarterly IFRS reports said.
The Chinese Alibaba Group launched the AliExpress online store in Russia in 2012. In May 2015, Alibaba registered a Russian legal entity, then Mark Zavadsky, a former journalist and founder of the Asia To Go Limite PR agency, became the company’s CEO. Now CEO is Sergei Grechin.
