Alexandrova and Pegova fought in the battle of empresses: who was more convincing

Everything has already been invented for such series

Marina Alexandrova and Irina Pegova found themselves drawn into the battle of serial empresses. Almost simultaneously, the projects “Ekaterina. Favorites” and “Tsar’s Vaccination”, where popular Russian actresses play Catherine II. And such a confrontation of images has become, perhaps, the main intrigue of new projects.

Both series are made according to script patterns that many historical projects follow. Against the backdrop of events from history books, a vigorous melodrama unfolds, and the search/battle for love is presented as tests on which the future of the state depends.

In the series “Ekaterina. Favorites”, the tangled personal life of the empress is intertwined with the struggle for power and passions around the manifesto on succession to the throne, according to which the empress intends to leave the throne to her grandson Alexander, bypassing her son Paul. In The Tsar’s Vaccination, palace intrigue is complemented by a real battle for vaccination in the midst of a smallpox epidemic. Advanced foreign doctors against frightened people and nobles who intend to use the epidemic for their own interests.

As a rule, the favorite pastime of both armchair critics and the public in the status of experts is the search for historical mistakes. And both series have already become the basis for very eloquent assessments, the most common of which are “historical nonsense” and “costume farce.” However, the situation when two projects can be watched almost simultaneously has allowed fans of imperial chic in TV series to get personal. So which Ekaterina is cooler: performed by Alexandrova or Pegova?

Marina Alexandrova has a slight advantage here. The actress is already in her fourth season in the role of the Empress, and in the nine years that have passed since the premiere of “Catherine,” the public could get used to Marina in historical dresses and among museum interiors.

There is, however, one very rightly noted detail. The actress, at least on camera, should gain a little age from season to season. In The Favorites, Ekaterina is about fifty, while Alexandrova is just over forty, and she looks ten years younger. Probably, in this situation, makeup that would add age would be appropriate, but if one was used, then one gets the feeling that they chose a completely transparent one.

The action of “The Tsar’s Vaccination” takes place in 1768, that is, Catherine is a woman in her late forties. Irina Pegova fits better into this age range. Her advantage lies in her forms, which in the context of the era raise far fewer questions than Alexandrova’s ever-wasp waist. Perhaps the fitness empress is an image that can be called bold and unexpected, but the model’s parameters still do not fit very well with a now fifty-year-old lady from the eighteenth century.

Alexandrova and Pegova played very different empresses. Marina’s is reserved and stingy with emotions; Irina’s is sometimes reminiscent of electric lightning. Most likely, such approaches already have their fans and haters, but the question of who is outplaying whom is absolutely unnecessary in these cases.

You can replay in a situation where there is something to play. And in this regard, both series do not give the actresses too much space. Like many other historical characters who have become heroes of Russian television projects, both Ekaterina Alexandrova and Empress Pegova were created using the stamping method. Apparently, the writers and producers present the Great One in the frame in a very specific way, and this presentation suits all participants in the process.

Everything has already been invented for such series. The style of dialogues, outfits, interiors, the nature of sex scenes, even basic emotions were developed. It’s probably much easier to shoot when a lot has been invented. The viewer, however, rebels from time to time. He points out all sorts of inaccuracies, complains about routine and the crisis of ideas. The irony is that ready-made answers have been invented for the public’s indignation. Like, our film is a feature film, not a documentary, and in general it’s all a matter of taste. If only I could understand whose.
