The singer talked about how she wrote this song: “In my notes, where I save impressions and lines, the line “it was -20 below zero, and you brought me flowers” was written down. First I came across this note, and then I began to write down the lyrics of the song like a movie, imagining what was happening there… The subconscious works, and it throws out something from its life experience that can probably be applied to all people.”
What happened there was that the heroine didn’t like the roses, or the movie with this character, or the fact that his behavior and words were too predictable, but she still “melted” and danced with him to old vinyl records. The lyrical heroine asks the question: what is love? Maybe a compromise acceptance of what is happening, despite the pain of the differences between them, is what it is?
In addition to the “roses-frost” rhyme, Alena also uses other popular images in the text: the hands of the clock froze, we are at different poles, our hands are in agony, we are in each other’s arms, a winter blizzard, a blizzard was spinning in a waltz, but you didn’t call…
“Of course, roses and frosts are a reference to one of the oldest rhymes, like blood and love, which they had fun with back in the 18th century,” Alena ironically mocks her own creation with a smile. – Of course, our relationship is terribly predictable, there are few scenarios. Everyone thinks that theirs will be somehow different from others, somehow special… Of course, it will be “not like that,” but still “so.” The main message in the song is that our expectations rarely match reality. We invent more partners for ourselves, and this reconciliation with reality does not happen easily, for some it does not even happen. I would like to quote “Alice in Wonderland,” where there is the following question and answer: “Does this often happen?” – “Always!”
Oddly enough, in this musical confusion with blizzards, expectations, disappointments, stopping clocks and sliding downhill, it was possible to preserve a subtle magical ether with the aroma of falling in love and the beginning of a romantic relationship. The singer emphasizes the importance of this, explaining: “The song is definitely light and romantic, because the first feeling is very beautiful. No matter what differences hinder you, it is nevertheless such happiness that we can experience such a feeling. And in the song at the end there is an open question – he didn’t call the next day, but maybe he will call the next day. So there is hope.”
A positive attitude towards the future has always been a distinctive feature in Alena Sviridova’s character; this helped her last week, in particular, to cope with a stressful situation during a trip to the mountains for the traditional post-New Year “gurneys”, so popular among pop artists. On the eve of departure at 3 o’clock in the morning, the artist woke up when someone broke into her room with a flashlight. It turned out that a hot water pipe had burst in the hotel, and she had to urgently evacuate to the lobby. But we didn’t have to wait long, two hours later the water supply was restored, and the singer fell asleep peacefully in her bed.
It’s funny that this incident at 3 a.m. fits into the performer’s tendency to get involved in stories at this very time, and the text “roses and frosts” is miraculously reflected in Alena Sviridova’s earlier hit “Oh!” (“I’m not going home”). The fact is that in the already classic jazz pop creation from the 90s, it’s also about the same time – 3 o’clock in the morning on the clock, besides, the lyrical heroine is seduced in the same way with the help of a bouquet of flowers (that time it came into play there was a bouquet of snowdrops, because, of course, it was spring outside, and the girl was only 15 years old). Yes, and questions regarding “what is happening? This is probably love, right?” the lyrical heroine sets the tone in the new single, just like in the old “Poor Sheep”, which made a splash 26 years ago. It seems that Alena Sviridova’s creative subconscious does not let its owner down, in the sense that it persistently walks around the enchanted circle of love and helpfully slips her time-tested images that the public will definitely love.
