Airbnb will pay €576 million to settle a tax case in Italy – Kommersant

Today, December 13, the American accommodation booking service Airbnb agreed with the Italian Tax Authority to pay €576 million as part of a settlement over tax underpayments. The point is that Airbnb does not withhold 21% of landlords’ income from renting out housing – this norm for short-term housing booking services was introduced in Italy in 2017. The service refused to admit “any liability” in this case, but agreed to pay a fine.
Earlier, the Italian tax authority said that Airbnb must pay €779 million due to underpayment of taxes between 2017 and 2021. In November, Italian media reportedthat Italian authorities have seized more than €779 million belonging to the service. As a result, the amount agreed upon by the Italian authorities and Airbnb turned out to be less, it corresponds to about a third of the company’s quarterly profit.
Airbnb also said it was continuing discussions with Italian authorities about taxes for 2022 and 2023 and that the amount it may have to pay could also be “substantial.”
