American actor Jonathan Majors has been convicted in the United States of assaulting his ex-girlfriend. He played the role of Kang the Conqueror in the Marvel Cinematic Universe and was scheduled to star in two films in the Avengers series. Marvel and Disney fired the actor.

A New York jury found the actor guilty of third-degree assault and stalking; he was acquitted of other charges, reports Reuters. The verdict will be handed down on February 6. Majors faces up to a year in prison. Prosecutors welcomed the jury’s decision because they said the evidence showed a “cycle of psychological and emotional abuse.” Prosecutors say Majors attacked his girlfriend, Grace Jabbari, in a car in March, leaving the victim with a broken finger, arm and ear injuries. The actor pleaded not guilty.

After the decision was made, a representative from Marvel (owned by Walt Disney) said that the studio had refused to collaborate with the actor on future projects.

Jonathan Majors made his debut in the Marvel Cinematic Universe in the TV series Loki and the film Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantomania as Kang the Conqueror. He was supposed to play the role of the main antagonist in two Avengers films that will conclude the sixth phase of the cinematic universe.
