For directing, he received a special prize from MK at the film festival of works by convicts
Two documentaries with the participation of Mikhail Efremov were shown at the 9th All-Russian Film Festival of Convicts, which was held in Chelyabinsk. The artist became the director of one tape and acted as an actor-hero in another.
Both are about convicts and life in prison. Thanks to these films, it is possible that the attitude of society towards those who have gone through prison experience will change. The screening was closed, but it was attended (and even hosted) by the author of these lines, the MK columnist, a member of the Presidential Human Rights Council.
“Our whole history says: the one who was in prison causes negative feelings.” With these words of the famous actor Mikhail Efremov, the film “Life after Prison” begins. In total, more than 100 films out of 850 Russian correctional institutions (from 56 regions of the country) were presented.
– These are very different jobs, – says Yulia Sudarenko, Commissioner for Human Rights in the Chelyabinsk region. – From comics to dramas, from comedies to thrillers.
Several paintings were recognized as the best, among them the same “Life after Prison”, where Efremov talks about himself. He does it somehow surprisingly simply and chooses simple words. Thanks to this film, you can see how he lives in captivity.
Library. “I have read so many books that I have never read before. I am finally reading this and I am already finishing the Old Testament. If only the hands and eyes reached this point.
Temple. “Batiushka comes a couple of times a week, which, of course, also strengthens me.”
Clothing industry. Efremov says that he “inserted locks.” He quotes lines from a poster that hangs in the colony: “Labor, regime, rejection of laziness – there are three steps to freedom.”
Environment. He says that normal and convicts, and employees. Among the criminals there are foreigners: Tajiks, Armenians, Nigerian and Iranian. “Behind bars, people are more likely to wake up more good than bad.” He says that he used to treat those who were behind bars normally, but now he will treat them even better.
Creation. “I started making documentaries here as a director (I had never done this before). We are doing KVN. One of the films called “Reassessment of Values” got into the film festival, but did not receive a strict jury award. We fixed this – a special prize for the best director from Moskovsky Komsomolets will be sent to Mikhail Efremov in the colony.
The actor himself was not brought to Chelyabinsk, but there was another hero of the film “Life after Prison”, Dmitry. He is a lawyer by education, received 10 years for drugs, served half and moved to correctional labor (where he works in his specialty). The show took place at the university. Almost 900 students listened to his very touching and personal story. Dmitry said that it is difficult for him to find a soul mate. Then I asked those who would be ready to connect their lives with the former prisoner to raise their hands. I didn’t see the forest of hands … And I remembered the words of Efremov about the fact that society treats prisoners with a warning. “Suspicious and disgusting. This is because it doesn’t really know much about what’s coming here. Life is not so scary. Everyone deserves a fresh start.”
