The world’s two largest personal computer manufacturers, Taiwanese Acer and Asus, plan to increase production volumes in India this year, reports Nikkei. In a conversation with the agency, representatives of both manufacturers emphasized that they consider increasing production in India as a long-term trend.
As the agency notes, the increase in production capacity in India is primarily due to measures taken by the Indian government last year to ensure that modern equipment is produced by foreign companies in the country itself, rather than imported. Last August, the government introduced rules that required foreign manufacturers of laptops, PCs, tablets and server equipment to obtain licenses from Indian regulators to import. The initiative met with a negative reaction from suppliers and almost led to a disruption in supplies. As a result, the authorities softened the requirements for importers.
In addition, in May last year the government announced an incentive program for foreign manufacturers of computer equipment and server equipment. As part of the program, the government will distribute $2 billion among foreign producers over six years. As a result, 27 companies became participants in this program, including Acer, Asus, HP, Lenovo and Dell. In exchange for cash assistance, foreign manufacturers will have to increase their production in India every year. Otherwise, they will be excluded from the program.
