They came from the clubs of Toulouse, Clermont-Ferrand, Nantes and of course Figeac and Souillac, in the Lot. Fifty children aged 9 and 10 hurry with their tray to ask for more melon or spaghetti carbonara in the Du Bellay room, in Souillac, where they are following an eight-day “rugby vacation” course. They don’t know it, but the 26-year-old serving them is here to serve a sentence. Thomas Mathieu will arrive this Monday evening July 25 at the end of the one hundred and five hours, neither paid nor compensated, of work of general interest (TIG) to which he was sentenced. Jean-Claude Tardieu, president of the Departmental Rugby Committee of the Lot, has regularly welcomed for eight years as a tutor the “tigistes” sent to him by the penitentiary service for integration and probation, based in Cahors.
“The first day, he arrived fifteen minutes early, I liked it right awaysays this militant of the TIG. If he went to court, he did something stupid. But he’s extra, we have to help him. He is full of qualities and does not know it. The first time I entrusted him with a responsibility, he was afraid, as if no one had ever told him that he could be trusted. »
This afternoon, Thomas Mathieu finds himself alone in the huge Louis-Vicat high school, deserted by children and animators since the morning. He cleans the rooms and cleans the kitchens. Not unhappy that the heat wave has passed, even if he takes a good sweat with this last task before obtaining the certificate of hours worked to send to his prison counselor for integration and probation.
Managing Impulsivity
At 62, the head of Lot rugby, who also works in events, is not angry with prejudice against people sentenced to this type of sentence. He remembers young people taken in TIG in a town hall, “welcomed like thugs, less than nothing. It destroys young people instead of helping them, whereas going off the road can happen to anyone.
Convincing his director’s office to take a first TIG was not easy. But the success of the experiment has brought down reluctance. In eight years, he says he has experienced only one failure, with a 48-year-old alcoholic. “After 35, it’s another job, it doesn’t interest me”he decides, more confident in the possibility “to put a 20-year-old young man back on the right track”.
At a time when sports clubs and associations are seeing a decline in volunteering, Jean-Claude Tardieu believes that TIG can provide great service. But it is above all the social aspect of the approach that is close to his heart. “If the associative environment, the cultural environment, even each household made an effort on the social, we would save France”he gets carried away.
