On the wall of house number 4 on Lesnaya Street, where Mikhail Zhvanetsky (1934–2020) lived and worked for 30 years, a commemorative bas-relief by sculptor Vladimir Soskiev was unveiled to the sounds of the Russian anthem. The ceremony dedicated to the 90th anniversary of the birth of the famous writer and People’s Artist of the Russian Federation was attended by Assistant to the President of Russia Igor Levitin, Zhvanetsky’s widow and son, friends and admirers of his work – musician Evgeny Margulis, writer Mikhail Mishin, artist Leonid Barats.
“I really like what was created by the talent of the wonderful sculptor Vladimir Borisovich Soskiev (he is also the creator of the tombstone on the grave of Mikhail Zhvanetsky at the Novodevichy Cemetery, installed in 2021.— “Kommersant”), noted Natalya Surova, the widow of the satirist. “I hope we pass on the memory not only to the city, but also to subsequent generations.”
“He belonged to the great southern Russian galaxy of writers, which included Babel, Olesha, Kataev, and was an organic continuation of this school everywhere: in Odessa, in Rostov, in Moscow,” emphasized the special representative of the President of the Russian Federation for international cultural cooperation, artistic director of the Moscow musical theater Mikhail Shvydkoy.—Zhvanetsky wrote about Odessa as a lost paradise. Bunin also wrote about Russia, which no longer existed and could not exist, but which continued to exist in his heart. It will always be read, because all people joke – both you and me, and Zhvanetsky helped and is helping to live!”
Assistant to the President of the Russian Federation Igor Levitin, who became the author of the idea of a tombstone for Zhvanetsky at the Novodevichy cemetery, in a conversation with Kommersant noted: “This is a man who did not tell us everything. It’s a pity that he left, but his works are still relevant, you need to re-read them more than once to understand how deep the meaning was invested by the author. And everyone understands them differently, often many perceive them ambiguously, but this is the power of Zhvanetsky’s lines. It seems funny, but in fact it’s about very deep and serious things.”
Photographer and writer Yuri Rost, for his part, praised the work of Vladimir Soskiev, academician of the Russian Academy of Arts: “All living people gain power over the departed: he cannot fix anything. Sometimes his memory becomes a terrible caricature. The main example is Kalashnikov (meaning the monument to Mikhail Kalashnikov on Sadovaya-Karetnaya Street, sculpted by Salavat Shcherbakov.—“Kommersant”). It’s very important to do this tactfully, and Volodya did it with such dignity that even Misha with his complexes could not find fault.”
When asked by Kommersant about what is most often remembered from communication with Mikhail Zhvanetsky now, Vladimir Soskiev himself answered: “Humanity! I love and appreciate his attitude towards life and tomorrow! What happiness it would be for everyone if every person followed his example of living! It had everything together: both pain and joy. He left such a bright mark that he will always be remembered. And may God grant everyone to achieve such popular respect.”
