People’s Artist of the Russian Federation Lyudmila Titova, who studied at the Higher Theater School named after. Shchepkina, on Yuri Solomin’s course, shared with MK her memories of her great mentor.
“I understand perfectly well that without him nothing would have happened in my life. I probably would never have become an artist, because Solomin accepted me (to the Maly Theater) and taught me,” admitted Titova.
– For us on the course, he was a god, we couldn’t do anything without him, “the master will come, he will judge us” – that’s the only way. He was an absolute authority, such an unattainable peak that his opinion was not discussed at all. They believed him unquestioningly. And he protected all his students, protected them, tried to help, to make sure that the first steps were taken “under cover.” We lived in the atmosphere of the reserve – he could solve, even when he was not the artistic director of the Maly Theater, but just an artist, any problems: with housing, with a telephone, he could “settle” everything: he walked, asked, negotiated. Times have changed, but his presence in the theater gave confidence in the future.
– What kind of teacher was Yuri Methodievich: gentle, or, conversely, authoritarian?
– He could be tough, everyone cried and he really liked that they cried. I now understand that he prepared our psyche in this way, made it “mobile” so that we could laugh or cry when necessary. But Yuri Solomin could really bring people to tears in order to get the result he wanted. And if he said that it should be done this way, it should be done that way, he did not tolerate any (disputes).
– Until his last minute, did he treat you as a student, or did your fame and title change the format of the relationship?
– They didn’t change it. Lyudmila Polyakova (star of screen and stage, – I.V.) was his student, he treated her this way, although they were almost the same age. It was normal to look at him from below, and it was very difficult to play with him, because he watched how you did it, looked through the eyes of a teacher.
