By 2030, the global demand for solutions using the technology of the Internet of Things (Internet of Things, IoT) will amount to more than $620 billion, having increased by almost 3.5 times in ten years. After analyzing 5.7 thousand English-language professional media for 2018-2022, reflecting the current business agenda, experts from the HSE Institute for Statistical Research and Economics of Knowledge (ISSEK) identified the top ten most promising areas for the development and application of IoT. This term, recall, refers to interconnected devices that can collect and transmit data over a wireless network without human intervention.

The Internet of Medical Things (IoMT) took the first place in the rating received by ISSEK. These are, for example, diagnostic devices, equipment for monitoring the condition of patients, and systems for accounting for stocks of medicines. The global market for solutions based on this technology amounted to $158 billion in 2022 (an increase of almost four times compared to 2017). The mass introduction of technology, which began to take shape during the pandemic, is possible in the next three to five years, experts say. Second place goes to fog computing and the cloud-based IoT. These technologies are used to process data from devices before being transferred to cloud storage. The mass introduction of this direction is expected soon – in the next two years.

In third place in importance is the mobile Internet of things (it ensures the interaction of various digital devices and the formation of a single smart space both at the level of megacities and individual houses). This technology will also gain popularity on the horizon of one to two years.

Further, experts highlight the artificial intelligence of things (AIoT), its mass implementation is expected within three to five years. “The development of software solutions makes it possible to build neural networks and conduct data preprocessing on IoT devices,” the ISSEK believes. This technology is increasingly becoming the basis for artificial intelligence systems in industries such as industry, energy, logistics. The top 5 are closed by solutions for a smart city and home, they are already significantly changing everyday life, experts say. They believe that this technology will become popular in a year to two years.
