Lavrov: OSCE is rapidly degrading, moving away from its principles

The Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE) is rapidly degrading, moving further and further away from its lofty principles, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said.
“The OSCE is rapidly and clearly degrading, moving further and further away from those high principles that were laid down in the Helsinki Final Act, in the documents of subsequent OSCE summits,” he noted (quote according to TASS).
In early January, OSCE Secretary General Helga Schmid did not support the idea of excluding Russia from the organization. She added that channels of communication will again be needed in the future, including to discuss issues on the security architecture on the continent. She noted that the OSCE is the only organization in which “everyone who is important for the European security architecture sits at the same table.”
At the same time, the Russian authorities have repeatedly criticized the OSCE. At the end of December 2022, Lavrov said that the West had turned the organization “into an arena for propaganda battles.” In early December, the official representative of the Russian Foreign Ministry, Maria Zakharova, also accused the OSCE of systematically destroying the principle of consensus in the organization, because it takes an exclusively anti-Russian position.
