The Russian Academy of Sciences is increasing its influence on the economic demand for scientific research. The authorities see this as necessary to ensure “technological sovereignty” in conditions of limited budgetary resources. Yesterday, at a meeting with Prime Minister Mikhail Mishustin, the head of the Russian Academy of Sciences, Gennady Krasnikov, announced plans to limit the number of institutes engaged in priority research, due to their availability only to the top of the ranking of scientific organizations. Now 50 institutes are working on some topics, while many areas remain uncovered. The RAS expects that the selection will allow budgets to be spent more efficiently.
