Borrell: elections in the Russian Federation took place in a limited political environment
The presidential elections in the Russian Federation were allegedly held in a “limited political environment,” said EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Josep Borrell.
According to him, the elections were held in conditions of a narrowing political space. This deprived Russian voters of a real choice and seriously limited their access to reliable information, the diplomat shared his point of view.
The European Union representative also said there was a “worrying increase in the number of violations of political rights and freedoms” that allegedly prevented a number of candidates from running. Borrell pointed out that the European Union recognizes elections in Crimea, Sevastopol, as well as new Russian entities.
