Vale and BHP will pay almost $10 billion in Brazil for breaking a dam – Kommersant

Yesterday, January 25, a Brazilian court ruled that mining companies Brazil’s Vale and Australia’s BHP, as well as their joint venture Samarco, must pay 47.6 billion Brazilian reais ($9.7 billion). The dam was built to drain wastewater from Samarco’s iron ore mines. In November 2015, the dam broke. 19 people died. In addition, the Rio Dosi River was heavily polluted, the mudflow flooded agricultural land with mud and industrial waste, destroyed houses, etc. The judge stated that the amount was determined taking into account the compensation and restoration costs previously recognized by the companies. Part of this compensation will go towards projects in the area affected by the dam failure.
Vale and BHP themselves said that the court has not yet informed them of this decision. Companies can still appeal the decision.
