President of Belarus Alexander Lukashenko called nuclear weapons a security factor and expressed the hope that they would never have to be used, informs BelTA.
“We are peaceful people. We fought for our history. I do not want my people, especially in my presence, to fight. We do not rattle weapons, but we are preparing to defend our country at any moment,” Lukashenka said at a meeting with residents of the agro-town of Belovezhsky in the Brest region.
In March, Russian President Vladimir Putin announced that, at the request of Minsk, Russian tactical nuclear weapons (TNW) would be deployed in Belarus. He drew the analogy that the United States is also transferring weapons to its allies.
At the end of July, the head of the Second Department of the CIS countries of the Russian Foreign Ministry Alexei Polishchuk informedthat Russia can withdraw tactical nuclear weapons from the territory of Belarus after the United States abandons the anti-Russian course.
