The possible supply of depleted uranium projectiles by the UK to the Ukrainian military will be a step towards a significant escalation of the situation. This was stated by Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov at a press conference following talks with the Foreign Minister of Eritrea.

“Certainly, as was said yesterday, <...> this is a step towards further escalation, and a serious, high-quality escalation,” he said. According to Lavrov, by its actions, the UK is taking the escalation “to a new, very serious stage.”

Lavrov stressed that Russia would take into account possible deliveries of weapons with a nuclear component to Ukraine. “Of course, we will take this into account in our actions. We have a commitment to international norms of warfare. We have our own military doctrine,” Lavrov added.

In addition, the use of weapons with a nuclear component “will drastically reduce (if at all) Ukraine’s ability to produce high-quality, uncontaminated food,” Lavrov stressed. He recalled that as a result of the use of these weapons in Yugoslavia and Iraq, the soil was contaminated for several years. “This, by the way, is about the question that the West cares about increasing agricultural production in Ukraine and cares about the export of Ukrainian grain to developing countries, including Africa,” Lavrov added.

The Minister also recalled that the use of depleted uranium in Yugoslavia and Iraq led to the fact that “tens of thousands of both civilians and NATO soldiers who used these depleted uranium ammunition suffered.” According to Lavrov, the result was a significant “splash of oncological and other dangerous diseases.”

The fact that the UK will supply Ukraine with shells with depleted uranium for the Challenger 2 tanks, reported Deputy Minister of Defense of the Kingdom Annabelle Goldie on March 20. She explained the supply of such ammunition by the fact that they are highly effective in defeating modern tanks and armored vehicles.

After that, Russian President Vladimir Putin warnedthat Russia will be forced to respond to the supply of shells with depleted uranium to Ukraine. According to him, this decision demonstrates the willingness of the West to fight Russia to the last Ukrainian, not in words but in deeds. According to Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu, after the British statements, the threat of a nuclear clash becomes more and more real.
