The number of cryptocurrency thefts this year as of December 9 reached 190, the report says Finbold. This is 44% more than in 2021, when 132 cases of cryptocurrency theft were recorded, and an absolute record for the period of statistics.
This year, a record was also set for the amount of stolen funds. On March 23, attackers managed to steal 173.6 thousand ETH coins and 25.5 USDC stablecoins from the network of the Ronin project. The previous record was set by a hacker, hacked the Poly Network platform in August 2021. In third place on this list is the Binance hack in October 2022, which led to the loss of $570 million.
As noted in the Finbold report, attackers’ approaches to theft also change over time. If earlier hackers were more likely to try to break into private digital wallets, then in recent months, decentralized finance (DeFi) projects have become their most common target.
