150 thousand transport containers from China have accumulated in Russian railway depots, it follows from datatrading platform Container xChange. According to Bloomberg, due to such a quantity of goods in Russia, the secondary market for commodity containers began to collapse. They are sold at almost half the price of other countries: the average price for purchasing a used 40-foot high cube container (40 HC/HQ, over 2.5 m in height) fell to $580 this week (in February 2022 – $4175). For new containers the price dropped to $1,450 from $4,309.
Russia expects trade with China to exceed $200 billion this year, up from $185 billion in 2022, according to Container xChange. In the first eight months of 2023, trade turnover between the two countries increased by 37% and reached $134.1 billion, Container xChange writes, citing data from Chinese customs authorities. At the same time, China’s exports to Russia increased by 73%, to $62.54 billion, and imports from Russia by 15%, to $71.6 billion.
In May 2023, experts interviewed by Kommersant reported that the cost of transporting containers from China to the Russian Federation, both by sea and by rail, had fallen by 30–35% since the beginning of the year. In their opinion, rates were overheated due to the increase in the volume of supplies from China over the past year, which filled the niche vacated by the lines of unfriendly countries.
