President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky read out his speech at the Golden Globes remotely.
Zelensky addressed the audience in a recorded message, recalling how the Golden Globes began in 1944:
“The Second World War has not yet ended, but the situation has changed, everyone knew who would win. There were still battles and tears ahead, it was then that the Golden Globe awards appeared in honor of the best performers of 1943, ”the politician said.
“Now is 2023. And it is already clear who will win. There are still battles and tears ahead, but even now I can say for sure that the best people are the free people of the free world. Those who have united around supporting the free Ukrainian people in our common fight for freedom,” Zelensky added.
The audience welcomed the representative of Ukraine.
“There will be no third world war, this is not a trilogy,” Zelensky continued.
As a gift, Penn gave Zelensky one of his Oscars, while he himself received the Order of Merit as a token of his passionate solidarity with Ukraine.
Earlier, Penn threatened to “melt down” his Oscar statuettes if the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences did not give Zelensky airtime in last year’s Oscars television broadcast.
Zelensky’s appearance at the Golden Globes comes a week after the White House pledged to send $3.75 billion in military aid to Ukraine and neighboring NATO countries, the largest U.S. aid package to date.
