Yle: Finnish Gasum continues to buy Russian gas

The contract of the Finnish state company Gasum with Gazprom Export is designed for “a few more years”, in connection with which Gasum continues to purchase Russian gas, the company said. According to the portal Ylesince 2019, the company has purchased gas from the Russian Federation in the amount of more than €730 million.

“The agreement is a so-called “take or pay” contract, which is common for gas supplies. This means that Gasum is obliged to pay for a certain amount of LNG every year, whether we receive it from Russia or not. Even if we do not apply for the minimum quantity, we will have to pay anyway,” Gasum explained.

The company clarified that it has no legal grounds for terminating the contract or applying to the arbitration court. “Since the beginning of the war (in Ukraine), Gasum has requested from Russia only the minimum amount of LNG stipulated by the contract. We have not agreed on any additional deliveries and are not going to do this in the future, ”the Finnish company assured.

In November 2022, the Stockholm Arbitration Court ordered Gasum to pay Gazprom Export more than €300 million in debt for gas supplies, and also recognized the decree of Russian President Vladimir Putin on the transition to payment for Russian gas in rubles for “unfriendly” countries as a force majeure, said in ” Gazprom export. The arbitration did not require Gasum to switch to payment in rubles, but obliged to pay not only for past deliveries, but also for unselected gas.
