US Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen believes that the Western coalition will be able to achieve the same goals by imposing a price ceiling on oil products as when imposing restrictions on Russian oil. However, she acknowledged that this would be more difficult given the range of different oil products and their prices, as well as the importance of a stable supply of Russian diesel fuel to the market.
“It’s more difficult, but we’ve been working hard to figure out how to achieve the same goals,” Ms. Yellen told reporters (quoted from Reuters).
The Minister, commenting on the establishment of the marginal cost for Russian oil products, noted that there is always a possibility that “everything will not go according to plan.” But, in her opinion, the coalition managed to carefully study the markets. Therefore, the Allies believe that their restrictions will achieve the same that they have achieved with crude oil.
Western Coalition agreed the introduction of two price ceilings for Russian oil products the day before, on January 20. One will be set for products that are traded at a premium to oil (diesel fuel, gas oil), the second – for products that are traded at a discount to oil (fuel oil). The coalition includes the G7, the European Union and Australia.
