Yandex’s tariffs for YandexGPT are two to ten times more expensive than Sber’s tariffs for GigaChat

Yandex, which opened up business access to its generative neural network YandexGPT, presented higher tariffs than Sber with GigaChat. Synchronous text generation, based on the price per semantic unit, costs Yandex two to ten times more than Sberbank. At the same time, it follows from the documentation that YandexGPT can work with a larger amount of context than GigaChat. Experts note that companies have opposite pricing policies in many IT services, and it is difficult to directly compare tariffs due to the difference between the algorithms.
On December 6, Yandex opened commercial access to its generative neural network YandexGPT through a program interface (API, which allows various programs and services to interact). Previously, access to the YandexGPT API for companies was free, but limited: Yandex provided it only after reviewing applications. The company introduced a fee for access to YandexGPT for business for the third month after another Russian developer of large language models, Sber (GigaChat neural network), did so.
“Kommersant” compared prices for generating texts via the API for business using YandexGPT and GigaChat. Both services calculate the cost of use based on the sum of tokens (meaningful pieces of words and sentences) in the question to the service and in its answer. Processing 1 thousand tokens in GigaChat, according to the service documentation, costs 0.2 rubles. The service from Yandex offers four tariffs, the cost of 1 thousand tokens in which varies from 0.2 to 2 rubles.
The cheapest tariff from Yandex provides work with the “lightweight” language model YandexGPT Lite in asynchronous mode. As Yandex clarified, responses in this mode are not generated in real time, but “within a few minutes or hours, when there is free time.” Sberbank clarified to Kommersant that the GigaChat API only provides a synchronous mode of operation, when generation occurs without additional waiting: “This option, according to the requests of our clients, is the most preferable.” The synchronous mode of working with the language model from Yandex is paid at a rate of 0.4 rubles. for 1 thousand tokens when using the “light” YandexGPT Lite model and 2 rubles. for 1 thousand tokens when using “full” YandexGPT.
The language models of Sber and Yandex differ in the total volume of context and generation result: GigaChat has a limit of 4096 tokens, YandexGPT has 8 thousand tokens. Both companies, according to their documentation, do not set separate token prices for the question to the neural network and for its answer. Access to text generation via GPT-4 from OpenAI is charged according to this principle. The price of 1 thousand question tokens, depending on the context limit (8 or 32 thousand tokens), varies from 3 to 6 cents, the price of 1 thousand answer tokens – from 6 to 12 cents.
OpenAI has closed access to its services from Russia. There are commercial services in the country that provide access to foreign language models. But since vendor prices are publicly known, “such services are limited in their ability to set a markup,” said Just AI product director Alexey Borshchov: “The only option for them to increase margins is to provide additional services.” The expert noted that it is difficult to directly compare tariffs for different products: “Different networks translate text into tokens differently, as a result, the request price may differ several times.”
“Yandex” and “Sber” generally adhere to different pricing policies, which can be seen in the prices of other cloud services, notes Larisa Malkova, managing director of the “Data and Applied AI” practice at Axenix: “In this sense, the companies are in antiphase – according to at least for now.” She notes that Sber representatives declare a desire to make AI widely available: “Increasing prices for AI services or the entry threshold would poorly correlate with these statements.” Yandex, as Ms. Malkova notes, “uses its capabilities and position in the cloud services market.” At the same time, Sber added to Kommersant that the current tariff is considered “basic”, and in the future the tariff line will expand.
