Yadro develops its own mobile OS based on Android

The Yadro group (Yadro; is part of ICS Holding) is gathering a team to develop a mobile operating system based on the Android open source code (AOSP), according to its vacancy announcements on hh.ru. The company is hiring lead programmers and software engineers who are described as developing an operating system for consumer mobile devices under the Kvadra brand, and is looking for a “mobile ecosystem development manager.”
The Kvadra brand is currently represented only by personal computers – a monoblock and a system unit. Kvadra’s website says a 10.9-inch tablet is coming “coming soon”. The announcement does not indicate which operating system the device will run on. However, in October 2022, the performance ratings website Geekbench information about Yadro Kvadra T40 running Android 12 system and octa-core ARM processor has been uploaded.
It’s unclear if Yadro’s tablet will ship with Google services, specifically the Play Store app store. As a general rule, Google does not allow device manufacturers to simultaneously license their services and release devices on deeply modified versions of Android. In addition, in February, the main legal entity of Yadro, KNS Group, fell under US blocking sanctions. Kommersant sent a request to Yadro about what services are planned to be introduced into the system.
As Kommersant previously reported, the Russian authorities and participants in the IT market since the beginning of the year are discussing creation of a Russian mobile OS based on AOSP. Yadro’s participation in this project has not been previously reported. At one of the last meetings attended by representatives of Sberbank, Yandex, Rostelecom and Astra Group, issues of legal risks associated with the use of AOSP were raised.
