Xiaomi has left its competitors behind – Kommersant FM

Xiaomi 14 became the best-selling smartphone of the year in the Chinese market in a couple of days. The new flagship has surpassed not only the iPhone, but also the traditionally most popular inexpensive devices from Realme. This is data from the largest Chinese online retailer JD. The manufacturer itself claims that sales of the new model have increased by 600% compared to the previous version.
Editor-in-Chief of the portal vilianov.com, IT expert Sergei Vilyanov recognizes the technical merits of Xiaomi gadgets, but explains the rush in China by local features: “Today, if you want a top-end Android smartphone, you have little choice. It’s either Samsung or Xiaomi. When you start looking at the alternatives, you find quite a lot of compromises. But only two brands make truly top-end models.
It is quite obvious that buying Samsung for consumers in China is not entirely pleasant, let’s put it that way. There is absolutely sincere natural support for local brands. Now Huawei, which is slowly returning after a powerful sanctions blow, and Xiaomi, which has already conquered the top and does not want to give it up to anyone, are being severely attacked in the market.
Xiaomi 14 and 14 Pro are really very decent devices. The company, in principle, has reached a level like Apple, where top-end devices from three or four years ago are still quite relevant.”
Prices for Xiaomi flagships start at 4 thousand yuan – that’s about 50 thousand rubles. For now they are sold only in China, and may reach other countries next year. Can Xiaomi seriously compete with Apple and Samsung in the global market?
Deputy editor-in-chief of androidinsider.ru Ivan Kuznetsov answered this question from Kommersant FM: “Xiaomi was the first to release a smartphone on the new Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 processor. Neither Samsung nor anyone else creates their devices on it. In terms of price, the iPhone 15 Pro costs twice as much. Obviously, people who no longer want to buy an iPhone will pay attention to the Xiaomi 14.
Xiaomi as a manufacturer is exploring new niches, that is, it not only acts as a designer and assembler, but also produces some technological solutions for itself, upgrades the processor, and optimizes it for its smartphones.
In a commercial sense, the company can compete with Samsung, since Samsung flagships are quite expensive. At the same time, technologically they lag behind in a number of ways. Apple still has a more specific audience, so there will be no cannibalization of sales as such. But we see that Russians are switching to Android, so in general, I think the model will be very promising in the Russian Federation and certainly in Eastern Europe, where similar rules of the game apply.”
Xiaomi 14 is the first gadget with the HyperOS operating system. It is based on Android developments, but has received additional functions. The new system will also be supported by TVs and smart home devices. Analysts believe that this is how Xiaomi is trying to develop a full-fledged ecosystem.
