Xavier Dolan announced his retirement from cinema – Kommersant

Canadian director Xavier Dolan has announced his retirement from filmmaking following a series of failures in his latest work. He spoke about this in an interview with the newspaper Pais.

The publication reports that the director’s last few projects, including The Death and Life of John F. Donovan (2018), received a lot of negative reviews from critics, which was a disappointment for the director. “I no longer have any desire or strength, almost no one sees what I’m doing. I have too many disappointments,” says Mr. Dolan.

The director also considers his latest project “The Night Logan Woke Up” a failure – only four countries (Canada, Spain, France and Japan) have acquired the right to show the picture. “It makes me think that my cinema is bad, but I know that it is not,” said the director. According to him, he did not earn anything on the picture, in which he invested all his funds and money, his father lent them to him. “This is a very thankless task, I am tired and discouraged,” adds Mr. Dolan.

The last word in cinema from Dolan will be a series created together with the HBO platform. The director notes that the project is “in its infancy.” “I will do it, and then I will end my career,” he said.

In a conversation about how he would no longer direct videos for singer Adele, Xavier Dolan quoted Japanese director Hayao Miyazaki as saying: “He says that making films only brings suffering. I confirm.”

Xavier Dolan did not give specifics regarding future plans after leaving the cinema. “It seems to me that the easiest solution is to go into advertising and build a house in the country,” he suggests.

The Canadian director is best known for I Killed My Mother (2009) and It’s Only the End of the World (2016). Xavier Dolan is one of the youngest directors in the world, nicknamed the “movie wunderkind”, who has found his own style and set of favorite themes.
