The Federal Antimonopoly Service (FAS) granted the X5 Group’s request to acquire 100% of Tamerlan LLC, which owns the Pokupochka, PokupAlko and Ga-ga retail chains. This is stated in the official statement of the department.
Representative X5 Group declined to comment on the possible timing of closing the deal. According to him, one of the priorities of the company’s strategy is development through alliances with regional players with the acquisition of a controlling stake.
“We are considering opportunities for such partnerships in all Russian regions and, in some cases, we send petitions to the FAS to study the position of the regulator,” said the representative X5 group. Vedomosti sent a request to Tamerlane.
“Tamerlan” works in the Volga region and in the south of Russia. Until 2011, the company was one of the largest X5 Group franchisees. The retailer chains now own 320 Pokupochka stores, PokupAlko alcohol stores and Ga-ga culinary production. The revenue of Tamerlan LLC in 2021 amounted to 21.7 billion rubles, net profit – 227 million rubles, according to SPARK-Interfax.
The market value of Tamerlan is estimated by Mikhail Burmistrov, General Director of Infoline Analytics, at 4-6 billion rubles. According to him, the company reformatted part of the Pokupochka stores into PukupAlko and, due to the expanded assortment with alcohol and food items, was able to increase revenue by 20%. As a result, the retailer’s turnover exceeded 26 billion rubles. per year excluding VAT.
Burmistrov believes that Tamerlan has a strong position in several regions at once – in the Volgograd region (where the company’s share in the grocery retail market is about 8%), the Astrakhan region (about 3%) and in Kalmykia (the share exceeds 5%) . “This is a strong local player with good stores that fully meet the standards of Pyaterochka and even, possibly, Perekrestok,” the expert believes. According to him, depending on the structure of the transaction, the objects can be effectively integrated into the X5 Group’s business and strengthen the network’s position in the southern region.
