WSJ: US requires Turkey not to serve Boeing and Airbus of Russian airlines

In December 2022, the United States warned Turkey that Turkish citizens could face jail time, fines and loss of export privileges if Turkey provided refueling and repair services to Boeing and Airbus aircraft of Russian airlines. It is reported by The Wall Street Journal (WSJ) with reference to sources.

American officials are also asking Turkey to extend these restrictions to Belarusian airlines. Export restrictions imposed by the US last year prevent US aircraft from flying to Russia and Belarus without a special license from the Bureau of Industry and Security of the US Department of Commerce.

The Turkish Foreign Ministry did not respond to a WSJ request for comment. According to the publication, the warning to the Turkish side was made by Assistant Secretary of Commerce Thea Roseman Kendler.

After the entry of Russian troops into Ukraine, the US and the EU imposed sanctions against the Russian aviation industry. The restrictions imply the closure of the airspace for the liners of Russian airlines. In early March 2023, Boeing and Airbus stopped maintenance of Russian aircraft. As of July 1, 2022, according to the Ministry of Transport, 77 Russian aircraft were detained abroad.
