Pneumonia claimed the life of a 65-year-old playwright and screenwriter
On January 8, at 8 o’clock in the morning, a talented prose writer, playwright, screenwriter and a very decent and honest person Alexei Slapovsky died in Moscow. He was 65 years old. He was hospitalized with lung damage on New Year’s Day to the intensive care unit of the City Center for Pulmonology.
On Sunday, his son wrote on social media: “Father is dead. Pneumonia. I am in Moscow, we are dealing with organizational issues with his wife Lena. The funeral will be in Moscow, where exactly – I will clarify later. In early December, Alexey Slapovsky seemed to have returned from the other world. He had a hard time with pneumonia, after which he wrote a short story about how doctors saved him, how an intensive care surgeon cut and growled: “Breathe!”. And he breathed, or rather, suffocated and thought that everything in a person’s life is metaphorical and suffocation is also a metaphor for how he lived. We read these lines on December 9th. It seemed that he was brought back to life, but very little time passed, and Alex again felt bad. It turned out that he had 75 percent lung damage.
We met a long time ago at a theater seminar in Tver, where he presented his one-act plays. For a long time it seemed that this was his genre, and then he moved on to large forms, took a step from theater to cinema. According to his scripts, the series “Stop on Demand”, “Plot”, “The Fifth Corner”, the film “Irony of Fate. Continuation”. He wrote books and literary novels, and in 2022 his novel The Guardian of Order was released. On December 31, Aleksey shared his pre-New Year memories on social networks – as he himself said, one good, the other bad, but in terms of skill and precise look, they were not bad. He was a subtle person and a master of words and could do in the cinema much more than what was offered to him.
Alexey Slapovsky was born on July 29, 1957 in the village of Chkalovskoye in the Saratov region. He graduated from the Philology Faculty of Saratov University, worked as a teacher of Russian language and literature, moved to television and radio, and became the editor of Volga magazine before moving to Moscow in 2001. And Saratov never forgot, and they love and remember him there. In 2019, he came there to the Oleg Yankovsky Theater Festival, worked with young authors. In the Saratov Drama Theater, even now there are performances based on his plays “Two Mothers, Two Daughters” and “The Descended from the Train”, which Alexei himself staged. His hero left everything in the past: name, things, all his life. There is a phrase in his play that everyone must make a choice on which fate depends.
Many years of friendship, since the Saratov times, connected Alexei with Sergey Puskepalis, who staged about seven of his plays in different cities, and on the basis of one of them – “Clinch”, staged in Ufa, then appeared the debut film of Puskepalis. In our conversation, Sergei Puskepalis once said: “I met Alexei not even as a playwright, but as a novelist – I read his book The First Second Coming, and it changed me forever. I can’t say that I fully understand everything about him, but in most cases he feels the same way as I do. He just knows how to put it right.” Later, their paths diverged. They stopped communicating. It was a difficult choice for them. And they left almost one after another, worrying differently about what was happening.
