With Igor Yasulovich said goodbye to the “Moonlight Sonata”

On August 22, at the Moscow Theater for Young Spectators, they said goodbye to the People’s Artist of Russia Igor Yasulovich. The mourning ceremony, which began in silence and ended with long applause, was visited by the correspondent of “MK”.
The semi-dark silent hall of the capital’s Youth Theater contrasted sharply with the noisy Tverskaya Street, flooded with the August sun. Everyone who got into the theater immediately felt mourning – and it’s not just about the black drapery, mournful bouquets and other funeral paraphernalia. A really small theatrical space (even Sergei Makovetsky said that the hall was small) seemed to be filled with grief to the brim.
Therefore, in the queue for the coffin, which moved very slowly, the admirers of Igor Yasulovich’s talent for the most part tried not to even whisper. But out of the corner of your ear you could hear some muffled conversations: someone was discussing the outfits of those who came to the ceremony, someone was talking about the actor and his fate.
The hall was empty at first. The main passage was occupied by people with flowers. The coffin on the stage, surrounded by wreaths, was open, which also affected the emotional state of the speakers. “Moonlight Sonata” sounded like a barely audible background sound.
The first to the microphone was the artistic director of the Youth Theater Henrietta Yanovskaya. The theater director still manages to restrain emotions, those who take the floor after her will either cry or speak through tears.
– Igor Nikolaevich served in this house, lived in this house. No wonder it is written that man is a creature worthy of this name. Yasulovich was 100% worthy. As a student, I saw a strange little boy in the film “Nine Days of One Year”. Then he had different film roles … At the beginning of 1993, we rehearsed the play “Ivanov and Others” (the production was nominated for the Golden Mask award. – I.V.). I invited him to the role of Count Shabelsky. When we released the performance, she called Igor Nikolaevich to the troupe. “I am a cat that walks by itself,” he replied. “Let’s try,” I suggested. And we tried… for all these thirty years.
“I was always amazed how he managed to get here from the balcony in a second,” said Sergey Makovetsky. And he continued, referring to another colleague who had gone into the world, as if he were alive:
– Someone said that we are playing on a small stage, but it seemed to the viewer that this was not a small stage, but an incredible outer space. It was a pleasure to exist next to you in such a space. And on tour even more – you were always fit, smiling. I did not hear from you annoyed intonations. I am sure that your friends and spectators who came to say goodbye will say the main thing – that you are honest, noble, such as there are fewer and fewer today.
Makovetsky spoke about the physical suffering experienced by Yasulovich during his lifetime:
You had your own pain and problems. But no one ever imagined it. You had a broken collarbone. The next day, with a small plaque, you were already playing. No one saw that you had a torn meniscus. You were fearless, they said: jump from a height – once – and you are gone. And where he? Already jumped!
You left on August 19, for the Transfiguration of the Lord. To leave on such a bright day, it must be earned. Now it is very painful and bitter for the theater, your wife, your grandchildren, friends. But you left so much heat that it will last for a long time!
Makovetsky uttered the last phrases with tears in his voice.
Valery Barinov confirmed the words that serving art for the deceased was fraught with a fatal risk:
– Seryozha (Makovetsky. – I.V.) remembered the case in Bucharest. The doctors told Yasulovich: “You are crazy! This is a displaced fracture, sharp bones. Another millimeter, and your nerve would have been cut, and you would have lost your arm. The next day, with this ridiculous plaque, he went out to play. I approached him: “Igor, what are you doing, taking such risks?” He was surprised: “Would you have acted differently?”
VGIK rector Vladimir Malyshev spoke emotionally:
– On behalf of all the graduates whom Igor Nikolaevich led to great art from VGIK and GITIS, I will say – these guys will carry the light further!
The removal of the coffin was accompanied by a fifteen-minute standing ovation. In Mamonovsky Lane, where the black cars of the ritual service had been waiting for this moment for several hours, there were few people left. The theater employees who lingered in the hall with their relatives “dropped out” – there was no feeling of crowding from this. But in absentia the artist was seen off by the whole country. And not only Russia, if we recall calls and letters from near and far abroad. From Britain, director Declan Donnell and set designer Nick Ormerod sent a poignant letter.
“Many of us dreaded this day… Me and Nick learned a lot from him. Like all great teachers, he taught us with his presence, his attention. We will miss him incredibly, but at the same time, he has become a part of us and that is something we will never lose.”
