White wine has taken over the trend – Kommersant FM

White wine has overtaken red wine for the first time. By the end of summer, its sales exceeded 50% of the total volume of still wines, Vedomosti writes. Large importers note that the share of white wine sales was at the level of 55-57%. Moreover, in previous years, for example, in 2019 it was about 40%.
The same trend is recorded by Viktor Kuznetsov, sales director and partner of the wine wholesale company Lion Wine:
“We are seeing the same trend. The ratio of white to red is 55% to 45%. This is due to the fact that quite a large number of women love wine. And the consumer now looks like this in approximately this ratio. That is, girls are more interested in wine, both at a young age and at any other age.
White drinks do not stain teeth, they are lighter, more understandable, and do not require any preparation. Wine is becoming more popular. And the trend for white sparkling wines from Champagne is putting pressure on consumption. So, I think sparkling wines also fall into this group.”
What else is behind the white wine trend? And are restaurateurs ready to meet it? Kommersant FM asked these questions to the founder of the From Berli restaurant and the coffee and wine bar Kiosk 1936, Maria Kosenkova:
“The first argument is seasonality, because with the beginning of the warm season – let’s consider it the end of April and until the end of September – during the summer verandas, of course, this trend is very actively observed. During the warm season, we sell about 85% of white sparkling wines and only 15% of red ones.
As for the design of the wine list as a whole, red wines make up somewhere around 30%, with the rest split between whites, sparklings, champagnes, petnuts and oranges. The second trend is due to the fact that the audience wants something lighter. White wines are often more mineral, more gastronomic. Reds are still heavier both in terms of degrees and in combinations with all kinds of dishes.”
At the end of 2022, red wine accounted for 48% of the Russian market, white – 42%, and rose – 10%. This data is provided by the Center for Research of Federal and Regional Alcohol Markets.
