Vyacheslav Mikhailovich Zaitsev was born on March 2, 1938 in Ivanovo. In 1956 he graduated from the Ivanovo Chemical-Technological College with a degree in textile design. In 1962 he graduated from the Moscow Textile Institute (now the Kosygin Russian State University) with a degree in fashion designer.

In 1962–1965, he worked as artistic director of the Experimental and Technical Garment Factory of the Moscow Region Council of People’s Commissariats. From 1965 to 1971, he held a similar post in the experimental and technical workshop of the All-Union House of Clothing Models (ODMO). In 1967 he received the Grand Prix for a dress under the motto “Russia” at the World Fashion Festival in Moscow. In 1968, together with the leading artists of the ODMO, he developed collections of women’s, men’s and children’s clothing for workers in the light industry of the USSR and the member states of the Council for Mutual Economic Assistance. In 1972-1978 he was the deputy artistic director of the ODMO. In 1979, he worked as a fashion designer in the household service system at the Moscow factory No. 19 of individual tailoring. Designed the costumes of the Soviet team for the opening ceremony of the 1980 Summer Olympics. From 1979 to 1996 he taught at the department of clothing modeling at the Moscow Technological Institute. In 1982, he took up the post of artistic director of the Moscow Fashion House. In the same year he created the first fashion theater in the USSR. In 1988 he was elected director of the Moscow Fashion House. In 1993, the institution was corporatized and renamed the Moscow Fashion House of Vyacheslav Zaitsev, the fashion designer himself took over as its general director. In 1991, he participated in the creation of a new police uniform, the design of which was adopted in the late 2000s. In 2007-2009, he hosted the Fashion Sentence program on Channel One. Since 2009, he has been the chairman of the jury of the Gubernsky Style International Fashion Festival. In 2016, Mr. Zaitsev was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease. In 2019, he handed over the post of General Director of the Moscow Fashion House Vyacheslav Zaitsev to his son Egor.

During his life he presented more than 70 clothing collections. Designed costumes for more than 20 performances. He worked as a costume designer for the films The Magician (1967), Hold on to the Clouds (1971) and The Nameless Star (1978). In the 1970s-1990s, he designed costumes for pop artists Alla Pugacheva, Muslim Magomayev, Iosif Kobzon, Tamara Sinyavskaya, Edita Piekha, Lyudmila Zykina, Philip Kirkorov. In 1982-1990 he designed costumes for the world figure skating champions Irina Moiseyeva and Andrey Minenkov, Natalya Bestemyanova and Andrey Bukin. In addition, he was engaged in easel painting and graphics. Exhibitions of the fashion designer’s works were held in Russia, the USA, Belgium and Estonia. Five of his works in 1999 were included in the collection of the State Tretyakov Gallery. Since 2007 he has been a member of the Russian Academy of Arts. He starred in the films “Ship of Twins” (1997), “You Can’t Forbid Living Beautifully” (1982) and “Vintage Clock” (2011).

Was married twice. The fashion designer is survived by a son and two granddaughters.
