The German government is discussing the possibility of buying pipes left over from the construction of the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline to launch a pipeline with a length of about 40 km, informed newspaper Welt am Sonntag, citing several unnamed sources.
The federal government is negotiating with the pipeline company Nord Stream 2 and appointed in the bankruptcy case of the pipeline operator, according to the newspaper’s interlocutors. We are talking about the acquisition of more than 3,000 pipes that were not previously used in the construction of NP-2, which are stored in the territory of the port of Mukran on the island of Rügen. The segments could be used to build nearly 40km of a line that would connect the planned LNG terminal near Rügen to the German mainland community of Lubmin. The deal to buy the pipes could prove difficult from a legal point of view, since Nord Stream 2 is still owned by Russia’s Gazprom, the newspaper points out.
Construction of an LNG terminal on an island in the Baltic Sea is scheduled to begin in May, with commissioning expected by the winter of next year, according to Welt am Sonntag.
“In order to meet the tight deadlines, it makes sense to use the Nord Stream pipes already in storage,” the newspaper explains.
At the end of September last year, pressure dropped in two Nord Stream gas pipelines. Subsequently, two leaks were discovered that were located in the exclusive economic zone (EEZ) of Sweden, and two more – in the Danish EEZ. At the same time, the second string of Nord Stream 2 remains intact and, in theory, can supply gas.
On September 30, during his speech in the Kremlin, Russian President Vladimir Putin accused the West of sabotage on the Nord Stream highways and the destruction of the European energy structure. At the time of the explosions, gas supplies via Nord Stream were suspended. Such a decisionGazprom”accepted due to a malfunction found in the turbine during routine maintenance at the Portovaya compressor station. Nord Stream 2 was not put into operation at all.
