A collection of 43 watercolor drawings of the last Grand Duchess Olga Romanova and artifacts associated with the House of Romanov were sold at auction for 60 million rubles. This is the first time that a collection of works of this magnitude has appeared at auction, because her works went into the hands of private collectors during her lifetime.
Olga Romanova is the daughter of Alexander III and the younger sister of Nicholas II. After the October Revolution she lived in Denmark and Canada. Throughout her life she painted more than 2 thousand paintings. At the time of her death in 1960, she remained the last Grand Duchess in Toronto.
During the auction, a historical record for the cost of works by Olga Romanova was set, the Moscow auction house RIA Novosti reported. The watercolor “From Service” from 1920–1930 was sold for 7 million rubles. (2.5 times higher than the previous maximum), “Landscape of a provincial town” – for 3.1 million rubles. (eight times more expensive than the start of trading).
The authenticity of each work is confirmed by the examination of the National Research Institute of Economics. P.M. Tretyakov. Also sold at the auction were personal autographs of emperors, portraits of monarchs by famous artists and ancient icons.
