Wagon production declines due to lack of parts

The output of freight railway rolling stock decreased in the first quarter of 2023 by 16% compared to the same period in 2022 to almost 13,000 cars due to a shortage of components. Such data are provided in the review of the State Transport Leasing Company (GTLK), which was reviewed by Vedomosti. The production of innovative railcars (with an increased load of 25 tons per axle) sank the most in January-March – it fell by 51% to just over 3,000 units.
Evgeny Semyonov, Executive Director of the Association of Wagon Builders Union (OVS), confirmed to Vedomosti the trend towards a decrease in the production of railcars, as reflected in the STLC review. According to his estimates, in 2023 the decommissioning of wagons will reach 30,000–32,000 units (+25–30% by 2022). “Therefore, the trend towards the purchase of new freight wagons is a logical step,” he explained.
