Fraudsters began to use the Telegram bot to create fake images of bank cards, said VTB Senior Vice President Nikita Chugunov. They hack into user accounts and send their contacts a request to transfer money to the card number from the image.
Fraudsters show victims cards that are supposedly issued by a large bank, with the last name and first name of the person from whom the messages come. “The card number is real, but the account belongs to a fraudster and is located in another bank, usually not so large and noticeable,” Mr. Chugunov explained. “Izvestia”.
VTB believes that such a scheme allows scammers to gain time to withdraw the stolen money, since the victim first contacts the bank, the design of which was used on the card, about the crime. As Mr. Chugunov notes, there have been isolated cases of fake card images before, but now the scammers have “automated the process” using a Telegram bot.
In 2022, the volume of fraudulent transactions without the consent of bank customers reached a record high of RUB 14.2 billion. The main direction of theft is the system of remote banking services for individuals.
