VTB spoke about the recruitment of their own victims by telephone scammers

Dmitry Revyakin, Head of the Corporate Interests Protection Department at VTB, told RBC about a new fraud scheme for cashing out stolen funds. According to VTB, the scammers began to recruit Russians who had already become their victims and offered them official jobs. In most cases, the target of the scammers were citizens of the older generation.

Attackers on behalf of the state security agencies began to call citizens who had previously suffered at the hands of scammers and offered them to officially get a job searching for criminals with a monthly income. After that, the client began to be used as a dropper. Fraudsters transferred stolen money to the bank card of Russians who agreed to work and demanded that they follow instructions to “save” the funds, but in fact, to illegally cash out other people’s money.

Fedor Dbar, commercial director of the Security Code company, explained that using droppers, attackers lengthen and complicate the chain of a fraudulent scheme, obfuscating the traces for investigating authorities and information security specialists. In addition, they expose not themselves, but the dropper, to possible punishment. RBC notes that deceived citizens risk falling under criminal liability.

In 2022 according to the Bank of Russia happened more than 876 thousand operations with bank cards without the consent of customers, as a result of which fraudsters stole 14.165 billion rubles from Russians. Banks managed to return to customers only 4.4% of the stolen funds, or 618.4 million rubles.
