The Dubious Drama of the Rich Man

Vladimir Sychev with a respectable gray hair and Maxim Lagashkin with a thin mustache play out in the palace interiors the drama of a rich man who was suddenly left without wealth. Perhaps there is potential in such a plot and even there are actors who can easily make you laugh. But, as it turns out, this is not enough.

The genre called “in the morning in the newspaper, in the evening in the verse” feels good in the format of musical pamphlets or in stand-up. Making a film based on hot events and releasing it while these events are developing is much more difficult, as you can guess from the example of some projects filmed in the midst of a pandemic. Then it was fashionable to look for funny things in zoom conference formats, and several series appeared at once in which the stars went wild on small screens.

However, even those who were directly involved in this later admitted that nothing exciting happened. Apparently, the creators of The Poor Oligarch were not afraid of such failures, and they decided to quickly play out the plot, in the center of which is a rich man under international sanctions.

It must be admitted that in the media, the London misadventures of our billionaires, who lost their usual way of life, looked very intriguing. Complaints about the impossibility of hiring a cleaning lady, reports that the necessary expenses were borne by the wife, and finally, demands to be allowed to pay for the protection of the estate, because the house has works of art of planetary significance, caused many inhabitants to laugh at Homeric maliciously. Here, it would seem, is the finished script.

But that’s just how it seemed. The fascination of news stories and the fascination of TV shows still live in different planes. It cannot be said that the scriptwriters of The Poor Oligarch did not try. Valet Adam is quite a character. A Scot who helps a Russian oil tycoon who has fallen under the British press because he himself hates the British is a more than ironic move. The scene where the oligarch apologizes to the swarthy escort and says: “Black lifes matter” before sex is a little on the verge of a foul, but also funny. True, there are very few such beads.

In such a situation, first of all, I feel sorry for the actors. Sychev is one of those artists who, perhaps, are not super actors, but are able to play their lines very brightly if they are written to them. Maxim Lagashkin has not only one facial expression in his arsenal, but for some reason it has recently been used in various comedies.

Of course, that producer is bad, who does not want, like a filibuster, to break the audience bank with lightning speed. But this requires a good pirate team, which the creators of The Poor Oligarch, apparently, do not yet have.
