The World Court of the Savelovsky District of Moscow found VK guilty of violating Part 1 of Article 13.11 of the Code of Administrative Offenses and fined 60 thousand rubles. for the data leakage of users of the mail service Mail.ru. This is the minimum fine for legal entities under this article.
As Interfax was told in the press service of the Savelovsky Court, VK conducted an internal investigation and found that in April 2022, an “external intruder” penetrated the test circuit of the operator’s IT infrastructure, which led to a data leak. The court considered this to be a violation of the law “On Personal Data”, since illegal access was granted to the database.
The data breach of Mail.ru users became known on January 13, 2023. In the archive that got into the network, there were 3.5 million records. They contained IDs, email addresses, phone numbers, names, surnames and nicknames of users. The press service of Mail.ru, which belongs to VK, promised to conduct a thorough investigation and noted that “nothing threatens mail users, the service is reliably protected.”
Part 1 of Article 13.11 of the Code of Administrative Offenses (“Violation of legislation in the field of personal data”) provides for a fine from 60 thousand to 100 thousand rubles for legal entities.
