At the 45th MIFF, Victoria Tolstoganova presented the film “The Edge of the Broken Moon” by Svetlana Samoshina in the Russian Premieres competition, where her heroine speaks out the accumulated problems with her teenage daughter. A little earlier, she played in the theater the mother of a 16-year-old guy who opened a fake account on social networks in order to get closer to her son. The actress spoke about the difficulties she herself had to face.
“The Edge of the Broken Moon” was filmed according to the script by Natalia Meshchaninova, who feels the problems of very young people as keenly as her own. 14-year-old Sonya learns that her mother lied to her about her father’s death. Together with her eldest daughter, she finds a girl in the country, where no one has come for a long time. In the old house, where the family was happy in some past life, together they pronounce the accumulated problems.
A little earlier, the premiere of the play “That’s All She” was staged by Danil Chashchin based on the play by Andrei Ivanov, where Victoria Tolstoganova again played the role of a mother who has a difficult relationship with her son. Her heroine makes an attempt to approach him through social networks, registers under an assumed name as his age. The son falls in love with his mother, or rather in her avatar, not knowing who is hiding behind him.
The producer of the play, Leonid Roberman, recalls that the original idea was to stage Five Evenings with Victoria Tolstoganova in the title role. However, the heirs of the author of the play, Alexander Volodin, did not give the right to stage it in Russia. We decided to turn to “Love Letters” and again faced the problem of copyright. “I asked Danil Chashchin to offer material that would not belong to anyone except the author himself, and it is desirable that the author be alive,” says Leonid Roberman with humor, “Within five minutes we agreed that it would be a play“ This is all she “.
Juliette Binoche played 50-year-old Claire Milhaud, a mother of two children, who meets a 29-year-old young man on social networks in the 2018 film “The One Who Wasn’t There” by French director Safi Nebbu, filmed in 2018 based on the novel by Camila Laurent. In the fake account, she is 24 years old. In 2017, in Honfleur, I had a chance to talk to Safi Nebb, who had just started filming a picture about a divorced French language and literature teacher who meets a man on social networks, falls in love, and then cannot admit that she is not who she claims to be. Nebbu was no less passionate about this story than Danila Chashchin. A similar story was in the domestic cinema. But here it is important to note that Andrey Ivanov wrote the play “That’s All She” back in 2013.
On the eve of the premiere, Victoria Tolstoganova told how she worked on the role: “The play raised questions in me. Sometimes I’m not very good at reading texts. Daniel helped me with this. Recently at the airport, I walked past a mother yelling at a four-year-old child. I stopped and said, “Quickly stop screaming.” People at such a moment are lost in surprise. I do not think that the meeting with me will remain in the memory of this woman for a long time, but maybe something will change for a while. We all know about parental blindness. Complicated relationships between generations are a given. I know many people who have had similar problems. Yes, I have had difficult times in my life. But the author of the play, Andrei Ivanov, brought the situation to a peak, brought it to such a level that it becomes scary. I want to say: “Everything! Stop.” It doesn’t matter how you get out of this situation. Then we’ll figure it out. Just stop. But all this cannot be stopped – such is human nature. This is a relationship not only between mother and son, but also between a man and a woman, between an adult and a child, when a person does not know and does not know how to act as he should. He was not taught this. There is an amazing combination of incongruous in the play. On the one hand, this is a catastrophic story of two people, their tragic misunderstanding, and on the other hand, there is love against this background. And it gives hope. Love is not about how good we are. This is a feeling in which the devil himself will break his leg. It’s impossible to live without it.”
She asked Victoria how the young actors were selected, whether her word was decisive in this scenario.
– Yes you? she says. – I said that I need beautiful boys and as young as possible. Joke!
– You were simply put before the fact?
– Exactly. Danil Chashchin sent me a photo with the caption: “This is Denis Vlasenko.” I have seen. What could I say in response? We just had a conversation. I didn’t decide anything.
Victoria spoke about her children, the experience of communicating with them is also important for understanding.
– My sons are 11 and 14 years old. They helped our performance. Danya was looking for music. I am a layman in this matter, so I asked the children what kind of music they listen to. As a result, the performance features two songs recommended by Fedor. He is proud of it. Teenagers have always annoyed me in teenage stories. I thought that there was no more moronic age, but exactly until my children became teenagers. It turned out that it was at this age that there was so much heat. At the age of 14, a person is amazing in his openness and closeness at the same time. I see when Fedor is overcome by a feeling of protest towards something, then lets go, how he copes or does not cope with such a state. Then it won’t happen anymore. At the age of 18, the nervous system becomes balanced. A teenager is not always able to cope with something. And it’s very cool. If a person is also fearless, then he is able to take a step without thinking at all.
Danil Chashchin believes that if you survived adolescence and did not die, then you will continue to live normally. Adolescence is very acute and sometimes it does not depend on the parents. Of course, I try to be a mother to my children. I can’t boast that we are friends. I envy those who say that with children they are like girlfriends or friends. We are mother and sons. I like our level of trust. I believe that if a child does not want to talk about something, then this is his personal right. There are a lot of things that I don’t know and don’t want to know. Children are on social media and phones. They have a whole life there – football, a lot of everything, chats for communication. My 17-year-old daughter Varvara reads a lot. And sons read. Vanya and I share a computer. Sometimes he leaves open correspondence with classmates. When I told him that it was necessary to close it, he turned a little pale, looked frightened. And I thought, “Poor thing. What can he have there?
