The Central Bank intends to expand the geography of use of the Russian payment system “Mir” by 2030 to 35 countries. The newspaper reported Vedomosti with reference to the joint presentation of the regulator and the Ministry of Finance, which was presented at the strategic session on the development of the financial market in the government.

According to the plans of the Central Bank, by 2025 the card of the Mir system will have to be accepted in 20 countries. By 2030, their number should reach 35 countries. So far, Mir is being accepted in 11 countries and partially recognized states: Turkey, Vietnam, South Korea, Armenia, Uzbekistan, Belarus, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Kazakhstan, South Ossetia and Abkhazia.

According to experts interviewed by Vedomosti, negotiations are underway to use Mir in Cuba, Thailand, Egypt, the UAE, Myanmar, Venezuela, Iran, Indonesia, Bahrain, China, India, Sri Lanka, Azerbaijan, Cyprus and Nigeria. Experts also expect Mir cards to be accepted in other countries in the Asia-Pacific region, Latin America and the Middle East to restore tourism. According to their estimates, the preparation time for the start of the acceptance of the Russian payment system reaches up to a year.

The day before, the US Treasury announced that it would impose sanctions for supporting the Mir payment system and the National Payment Card System (NSPK) abroad. Experts interviewed by Kommersant believe that this could slow down the expansion of the geography of accepting Mir cards and damage cooperation with countries where they are already accepted.
