Russian airlines carried 95.1 million passengers in 2022 Vedomosti with reference to the source and closed statistics of the Federal Air Transport Agency. Compared to 2021, passenger traffic decreased by 16 million people, or 14.3%. In December, airlines carried 7.1 million people (1.1 million or 13% less than in the same month of 2021).
Passenger turnover decreased by 6.4% to 227.7 billion passenger-kilometers, the percentage of seat occupancy increased from 81.5% to 84%, the indicator of commercial load of flights – from 65.4% to 70.6%.
In March 2022, President Vladimir Putin set the goal of at least 100 million people traveling internally. In November, the head of the Ministry of Transport, Vitaly Savelyev, assumed that airlines would transport 94–96 million people per year.
The decrease in passenger traffic occurs against the backdrop of the Russian military operation in Ukraine. During its implementation in Russia, 11 airports in the south of the country were closed. According to the Ministry of Transport, this reduced passenger traffic by 19 million people. In addition, Western countries in response to the actions of the Russian Federation imposed sanctions against the Russian aviation industry.
