Vedomosti: Chinese Chery abandoned the idea of producing cars at the UAZ site

The Chinese automaker Chery has changed its mind about producing cars at the site of the Ulyanovsk Automobile Plant due to sanctions, reports Vedomosti. Chery has a localization project with Sollers Auto (the group includes UAZ). In June, UAZ was included in the sanctions list of the European Union.
Vedomosti cites two sources familiar with the companies’ plans. One of them said that Chery may consider localization at another Sollers Auto site. Another interlocutor of Vedomosti specified that Chery is considering various options, including without the participation of Sollers. According to him, the Chinese concern may take the site of one of the Western automakers in case of its withdrawal. The manufacturer is unknown.
As the source of the newspaper specified, Chery’s local products on the Russian market, most likely, will not be presented under the main brand. The Chinese concern also has sub-brands Exeed, Omoda and Jetour. The last two are not yet sold in Russia.
In July, the share of Chinese cars in the Russian market exceeded 24%. The Chery brand was the most popular among Russians (2577 such cars were bought). Due to the reduction in the supply of European brands, Chinese manufacturers remained almost out of competition, they say market participants.
