Valery Gergiev announced plans to do “most powerful projects” in China

The artistic director of the Mariinsky Theatre, Valery Gergiev, who turned 70 today, has accepted an invitation to open another new theater in Beijing at the end of September. He stated this at the meeting with President Vladimir Putin. Mr. Gergiev counts on the implementation of the most powerful projects in China.

Earlier today, May 2, the President of the Russian Federation awarded Mr. Gergiev with the Order of Merit for the Fatherland, II degree.
In March 2022, Latvia banned the artistic director of the Mariinsky Theater from entering for an indefinite period; in October 2022, Ukraine included him in the sanctions list. Valery Gergiev’s performances abroad were also cancelled.
